Of course, that's easier to point at than to create.

The Daily Show (the prime example) doesn't entirely consist of lambasting the nations' politics and leadership...sometimes it's funniest when it goes after aspects of celebrity culture or the way we live, or, indeed, environmental awareness/activism, sports...and of course, my favorite, the excesses of local and cable TV news. But they "get you in the door" with a promise of wit, intelligence, and humor.

I think all digest-type programming succeeds best when, in the midst of programming their audiences expect, they occasionally push viewers OUT of their comfort zone and offer them something they SHOULD be interested in, not just what they ARE interested in. Not a steady diet of that, but just enough to keep viewers on their toes.

This may be due to the never ending quest of most corporations for marginal efficiencies versus ground breaking innovations. Specifically, mainstream media has become, at best, adutainment, and increasingly boring mash-ups of the same Associated Press story. Regarding "few editors, mostly white men in the media capital of New York City" those editors seemed to have been driven by a "higher purpose" than what drives today's media elite.

re: A Celebration of Innovation

Hi Jack,
Good post. As a serial entrepreneur, I think about innovation and creativity a lot. Just like you, I had some awfully fine mentors in my youth. One stands out: Mike Vance, who was head of creativity at Walt Disney World back in the 70s. I attended a mesmerizing half-day seminar he led and it truly changed my life. I still remember his definition of creativity: Thinking up new things or re arranging old things in new ways. Most of what we do, it seems to be, is re-arrange things, but in new exciting ways.
I dropped off a message to someone there about trying to get a feed of TV listings so we can publish them in our way cool, and very different Jobs Newspaper (Jobdig). Local papers in our markets often do not publish them any longer.
thanks,
GL HOFFMAN

I love this blog. I think it is a perfect way to frame the upset, miracle, happening that took place in Iowa. It did go against conventional wisdowm what took place in Iowa and stood this presidential campaign on its ear. It opening up a new world of possibilities....

I also think that it is auspicious that

this took place in the home town of Tiitan

TV's parent company. Iowa can give forth to some major changes in this country.. Barack for starters

and Titan TV as well.

Another obsticle for stations to monetize their websites is while web growth charts look good going foward, the gross dollars will still be far below what the 'mother ship' brings in. What does this mean? Account Execs need to be adequately compensated for their efforts. This usually means base salary + commission. If the Internet $$ are small (albeit growing) they don't throw off enough commission dollars to make the ROI for either party worth while. It's right to think that to be successful stations need dedicated WEB AE's but they will expect to be compensated like their TV sales brothers. As of now the comp plan hasn't been invented to get AE's excited about selling WEB. It's like a comment I recently heard. 'TV station web sales are the most talked about least profitable part of the business' That's not changing anytime soon.
On another note, cable has done a great job mining the nooks and crannies of local markets for advertisers who cannot afford local TV or who just need a couple of zip codes to get their message across. TV Station Websites could capture this market on the local level. But will the big national accounts like Autos, Package Goods support local TV station web sites?

re: Parents and Children

What an impressive solid set of values you have got going for yourself.. anyone who is that clear about " what matters" is going big places and taking my son with him.
Also I am also thrilled that you and I share such

admiration for writers like Richard Russo, who is also a guy who has his feet firmly on the ground and knows that character and old fashioned values count.

It is about creating a shared vision and then executing on that vision. It is about overcoming the daily distractions and keeping focus. In the end it is about urgency without panic. It is about keeping your wits about you when those around you are unable to do the same. Mark Effron, in his six month tenure, has proven he can do all of the above.

The local guys know the territory well and they also work with the local newspapers. Yes, they carry the network for national and world news. But TV broadcasters have to be local, just like the single daily newspaper that is left in this internet age. I am sure that Titan TV player will probably be helpful and maybe help make sense of the local's website (which you said correctly is a mess.)

re: Socheata and Stuart

Nice message.

As someone who came to the US from a very small country, it took me a while to realize that the US is actually 50 countries. Does your database cross-reference the content of the broadcasts? So that I can compare how a SF Bay Area station and an OK City station, for example, treat the same piece of news.
