Soooo...what are you wearing?
Nothing's more awkward than a red carpet interview before a big awards show. The questions are dumb, the answers are rehearsed. Any candid moments make you want to wince, look away, or laugh at (and not with) someone. But, I'm a sucker for everything entertainment-related so here's my take on the 2008 Academy Awards.
1) The Winners
Best Picture -- "No Country for Old Men".

There's slightly unnecessary hype over "There Will Be Blood" and slightly unnecessary backlash over "Juno", so I'm going with the Coen brothers.
Best Actor -- Daniel Day-Lewis
You can't mess with the acting machine that is DDL. It can't be done.
Best Actress -- Ellen Page
How about rewarding an actress who isn't in a period piece that requires her to cry profusely or have some sort of deranged incurable illness? Hmmm...how 'bout it?

You could get the full list of my picks, but sorry, I'm a green blogger and not a celebrity blogger (though they can certainly intertwine). Cue intertwining!
2) Not Carbon Neutral but Carbon Cautious
Last year, the Oscars claimed to be "Carbon Neutral" but there was a some skepticism about that whole "offset everything" issue, so they took a different tactic this year: scale down!
Instead of those lavish gift bags that usually contain thousand-dollar jewelry, gold-encrusted iPhones and plastic surgery coupons, those needy celebrities get a small sculpture and a year's supply of carbon offsets from TerraPass! Woohoo!
Instead of pre-party after pre-party after pre-party, many famous folks took part in the Global Green soiree that raised awareness about that little global warming thing...and raised cash for the cause too -- $420,000 worth!
3) Writers!
I write. I've written. I'm a writer. So, I sympathized with the cause those striking writers were fighting for, but as an avid television watcher, I was kinda pissed. However, I'm glad that everyone's back to work and Oscar host Jon Stewart has some help. Nevertheless, if you've seen the Daily Show recently, Stewart was doing a pretty kick-ass job being funny without their help.
4) Time to Summarize
In summary, I hope everyone enjoys the show (possible) and that it doesn't run too long (impossible) and that Ryan Seacrest isn't too annoying (also impossible). Sadly though, Al Gore will not be the star of the Oscars this year...but hey, maybe Ban Ki-Moon could make a surprise appearance? We can only hope.
